Real-life Mario Kart has already hit the streets of Tokyo, and now it's coming to Melbourne.

Head to the racetrack (its whereabouts, a mystery), pick out your favourite character, then drive a course dressed as them.

Tokyo’s version lets racers zip through city roads and backstreets, but it hasn’t been confirmed if that will be the case in Melbourne. In Japan the carts are designed to carry one person each, and come with walkie-talkies and speakers, so drivers can chat to their friends and listen to a personalised soundtrack.

Drivers will head to Flinders Street to be picked up, then taken to a secret location for the race.

Tickets are $100 ($85, plus GST and a fee), with sessions in May, June and July.
