A portrait of Brigitte Bardot watches over the new Anine Bing shop in Toorak, just as it does in every one of the eponymous label’s global outlets. The image, by legendary 1960s photographer Terry O’Neill, serves as a kind of shorthand for the brand: effortless, eternally cool, feminine, powerful. With more than a hint of vintage rock’n’roll.

One of the first fashion bloggers to launch her own ready-to-wear brand, Bing started her label out of a Los Angeles garage in 2012. And it has a lot of fans, including 1.1 million followers on the former model and musician’s personal Instagram account and high-profile devotees like Margot Robbie, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Rita Ora and Cate Blanchett. From the beginning, the line has fused its Danish-born founder’s Scandi minimalism with vintage LA rocker cool, drawn from the dive bars and flea markets of her hometown.

It’s a stylish collision that’s produced signature tees and sweats – including covetable sell-out jumpers featuring tigers, eagles and, occasionally, Elton John – plus timeless blazers, pants, leggings, denim, outerwear and lingerie. Expect a wide range of fits, from oversized and regular to high-rise and loose, made from an eclectic mix of fabrics: leather, lace, metal studs, classic wools and crisp cottons. Then there are the shoes (Chelsea and western boots, slides, sneakers) and accessories (chunky gold chains, retro sunnies, home scents, woven totes).

While new collections and collabs are added each season, the label also maintains a classic line of workwear staples and weekend threads, featuring go-to pieces like blue jeans, black mules and butter-soft leather moto jackets.

The newly opened Melbourne shop is the second Australian standalone store for Anine Bing, following a Sydney boutique in late 2019. And it joins 18 other outposts worldwide, from LA and Brooklyn to London, Paris and Berlin.

Fitted out in simple blacks and whites, the 125-square-metre space is flooded with natural light. Shiplap walls and ceiling contrast with obsidian track lighting. There’s rustic wood and antiqued mirrors alongside luxe brass and marble. Mid-century modern seating and custom furniture made locally in Australia complete the interior, though the real stars are the clothing and accessories, showcased against minimalist fixtures and a cool white background.

There’s also a large private garden in the back of the store. It’s a calm space that nods to Bing’s California home, with wrought-iron furniture, planted lavender and olive trees, a running stonework fountain and painted stucco surrounds.

In-store services include complimentary one-on-one styling consultations, personal shopping, virtual appointments and gift boxing with any purchase.
