We sent stylish snappers Kaede James Takamoto and Liana Hardy around the city, from Brunswick and North Melbourne to Armadale and Brighton, to find out what people are wearing – on their daily commute, post-work and off-duty. Here are some of our favourite looks.

Yoshino Maruyama, Johnston Street, Abbotsford

Age: 30 Occupation: Post Sole Studio store and studio manager Tell us about your outfit today. I studied fashion design at university, and this dress is from a girl who was a couple years my junior called Breah Lucas. It has detachable sleeves and lots of buttons and ties, which I love. The top underneath is by another designer from New Zealand called Nicole Van Vuuren. She uses scrap fabrics. And then the jeans are second-hand and shoes are Post Sole Studio. What’s your style inspiration? Growing up, Japanese street style was a huge inspiration for me. My grandma would send me fashion magazines every month from Japan. There was one called Jelly and another one was Popeye.

Noè Harsel, Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick

Age: 51 Occupation: Museum director Tell us about your outfit today. I’m a very keen thrifter so the trench coat and suit jacket are from a Sacred Heart op shop down in South Melbourne. The jeans are new from Skin and Threads. The shoes are Nike, the glasses are from Wink – they’re an optometrist in Elwood – and my jewellery is also op shop finds. What do you gravitate towards when shopping? I always try to make sure that I feel comfortable because I do a lot of walking. I make sure I can sit down, do a squat and walk a block [in whatever I’m wearing].

Jesse Rhys Sciberras & Dannielyn Noriel, Cheel Street, Armadale

Age: JRS: 34 DN: 25 Occupation: Sales managers. Where do you get your fashion inspiration? JRS: I like the alternative scene, or anything that’s a bit alternative. I used to be an emo kid back in the day, and I’m just a little more grown-up now. DN: I get my inspiration from everyone. I could be looking at my dad, and he’s wearing daggy shorts and a loose T-shirt, and think, “I want to capture that, I want to make it my style.” Observing everybody, seeing how they rock it, and thinking, “What can I do to give that my own twist?”

Nathan Ashdown, St Kilda Road, Southbank

Age: 19 Occupation: Student Tell us about your outfit today. The main part is my bomber jacket with crochet embroidery that I really love – I got it in Japan. The rest of my outfit is jeans, my motorcycle riding gear underneath, and steel cap boots to make sure if I fall off, I’m going to be safe. What do you gravitate towards when shopping? Mostly it’s second-hand, I don’t want to buy new stuff. I also buy a lot of music shirts from concerts. I was at Olivia Rodrigo last night and I had to have a shirt.

Sora Kim, Swanston Street, Parkville

Age: 33 Occupation: Fashion Tell us about your outfit today. Most things are Korean brands. My dress is from Reality Fiction, my denim pants are from Ponytail – it’s my favourite Korean brand – the shoes are an Asics x Cecilie Bahnsen collaboration and my jacket is from APC. What do you gravitate towards when shopping? I like colour and a loose fit. Where do you get your style inspiration from? Usually from fashion brands and Instagram – an account called @sneakersnstuff.

Megan Fulker & Elise Menzies, Lygon Street, Brunswick East

Age: Both 28 Occupation: Digital marketing and editor Tell us about your outfits today. MF: I got these pants from my friend’s brand, she makes everything in Marrickville, Sydney. I got my belt in Berlin and the singlet is just from Bonds. These shoes were just left at my house, I don’t know whose they are – no one claimed them, so I was like. “Right they’re mine”. EM: I got this top from Ganni in Paris, the shorts are Mode Mischief, my necklace is from a little boutique on Greville Street in Prahran, earrings are F&H Studios in Byron Bay and the sunnies are Le Specs.

Sara Seresli, Swanston Street, Parkville

Age: 21 Occupation: Student Tell us about your outfit today. My shoes are Puma, they’re the Skepta limited edition. My pants are from Adidas. My jumper is United Colors of Benetton. And then I’ve got a Uniqlo T-shirt underneath. What do you gravitate towards when shopping? I really do like bright colours. I was overseas in Europe a couple months ago, and it was just so nice to see so many vibrant colours everywhere. And I feel like I want to bring that here more.

Eric Mai, North Melbourne

Age: 30 Occupation: Real estate agent Tell us about your outfit. I’m wearing basic loafers, dress pants with a quarter zip, a green sweater on top and a jacket – just because of the weather. How does your style fit into your lifestyle? I try to be comfy while looking professional. What do you gravitate towards when shopping? Something that’s versatile. Something that I can wear to work, at home and also to dinner. I don’t go all-out, but I don’t go too casual.

Emily Short & Claudia Lipinski, Johnston Street, Abbotsford

Age: Both 28 Occupation: Marketing manager and talent manager Tell us about your outfit today. ES: I’m in head to toe Lioness. I’m wearing a Balenciaga bag and Tony Bianco loafers. For jewellery I’ve got a Natasha Schweitzer engagement ring on. CL: I’m wearing Tony Bianco loafers as well. Nakedvice jeans and a Dissh singlet. And this is a Sarah and Sebastian necklace. What do you gravitate towards when shopping? ES: I think I’m always reaching for something that’s comfortable. I love that masculine kind of look and then paring it back with something feminine. But comfort is key. CL: Simple, basic stuff. I’m not someone that leans too heavily into trends, so whatever I feel comfortable in, and can hopefully have longevity in wearing.

Justin, Flagstaff Gardens, West Melbourne

Occupation: Student Tell us about your outfit today. I’m wearing this sweatshirt I bought in Indonesia and these Balenciaga shoes – they’re slip-ons. And I’ve got this tote bag I use when going to uni. What do you gravitate towards when shopping? I just like practical, simple stuff. I don’t really like going for flashy things. I buy clothes that I need, so I don’t just go out there like, “Oh I like this one, I’ll buy it.” I don’t really like shopping that much so I only go out when I need something.

Vanessa Bong, Symonds Street, Hawthorn East

Age: 30 Occupation: Freelance textile designer and illustrator Tell us about your outfit today. I am wearing a top from Gu, my jacket is from Seoul, and a pair of jeans from Rollas. How does your style fit in with your lifestyle? I think of style as being an extension of myself. If my clothes make me feel comfortable and happy in some way, it’s a win. What do you gravitate towards when shopping? Definitely colour, then versatility. If I know it will look good with other pieces in my wardrobe, I gravitate towards it.

Georgina Mauger, Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick

Age: 30 Tell us about your outfit today. I’ve been traveling for the past eight months, and this is one of the four outfits that I’ve had access to. The shirt’s from Zara and the jacket’s from Uniqlo. The shoes are New Balance, the jewellery is gold. I bought it before I quit my job, I decided to treat myself to some nice quality jewellery. What do you gravitate towards when shopping? I think materials are really important. So I love anything natural – linens, cottons. I think anything that’s got too much synthetic in it, it just loses its shape, and it tends to look bad.

Eugenie Fisher, Lygon Street, Brunswick East

Age: 31 Occupation: Bar owner Tell us about your outfit today. This is all work gear. The shoes are Salomons that are about to fall apart. The pants are old Dejour that I pleated. The shirt’s from this town on the South Coast called Congo. There’s this guy who runs a ceramic store there, and he also sells these shirts. Where do you get your fashion inspiration? I like to look around at all the consignment places. I like Swop and I like Goodbyes. There’s a really great op shop in Elsternwick, called the Posh Opp Shoppe.
