Oh! Jean Records
Features
After two years running pop-ups and trading on the web, the next logical step for the team behind Oh Jean! (formerly known as vinyl.) was to open a fixed shop. Just blocks from several of Melbourne’s favourite record retailers, the Nicholson Street store brought yet more browsing possibility to Fitzroy when it opened in 2016.
Clay brick walls and polished brownstone floors greet you upon entrance. The space’s black fittings offer a bold aesthetic contrast.
Stock-wise there’s nothing but records, with plenty from Australian and New Zealand artists. Everything is brand new, purchased directly from local and international distributors. The store houses roughly 1600 titles at any one time, spanning indie, jazz, punk and more. In-store performances and signings are frequent. Past acts include Camp Cope, Chastity Belt, Dappled Cities and Wil Wagner.
At the in-store espresso bar, Rriot House, you can score Veneziano espresso and cold brew, juices from Healthy Humans and Tea & Spice chai.
