Earlier this year, we reported that 128-year-old Melbourne institution Hopetoun Tea Rooms was up for sale after going into administration.
The historic eatery has been a fixture in the CBD’s Block Arcade since 1892. But now, under the ownership of Vikram Singh and following the end of its 128-year lease, it’s moving into a heritage-listed 161-year-old building on the corner of Bourke and McKillop Streets in the CBD.
From the 1880s, the building was home to the Commercial Bank of Australia. More recently, it housed local jeweller Kozminsky for four decades (and has been largely unoccupied since Kozminsky moved out in 2017).

SIGN UPFull of old-world charm, Hopetoun Tea Rooms’ original location was known for its lengthy queues – both for its extensive menu of English teas, herbal infusions and more exotic blends, and its extravagant displays of cakes, tarts and muffins.
Loyalists will be pleased to know the iconic cake display and original tea sets will be transported over to the new location.
Hopetoun Tea Rooms is slated to reopen at 421 Bourke Street, Melbourne in early 2021.
