If you were at Abbotsford Farmers Market on Christmas Eve, you were part of something special. Unwittingly, it was the last hurrah for the favourite Melbourne market.
It’s just been announced that – after 20 years serving the community in Abbotsford and beyond – the market has closed, and the event on December 24, 2022 was its last.
“It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of the Abbotsford Farmers Market,” wrote Melbourne Farmers Markets in a statement. The organisation also runs the Alphington, Carlton and Coburg markets, which will continue operating.

SIGN UPThe statement goes on: “Melbourne Farmers Markets, Collingwood Children’s Farm and the Abbotsford Convent have formed an incredible bond throughout the years, and as the precinct has matured and our organisations have changed, a natural, mutual and amicable parting has emerged.
“This change comes as we fulfil our vision of holding weekly markets to support local Victorian producers, and to be a dependable weekly shop for our loyal customers.”
The beautiful grounds of Abbotsford Convent made for one of the city’s most beloved Saturday fruit and veg markets. The nearby Collingwood Children’s Farm had its own stall, and you could shop the likes of Mount Zero Olives and Schulz Organic Dairy.
In closing out its statement, Melbourne Farmers Markets said: “We look forward to seeing you at our weekly markets in Alphington, Carlton and Coburg, where we will continue to connect local farmers and urban communities.”
