As the pandemic began to take hold in March 2020, Attica’s Ben Shewry was one of the first (and most drastic) pivot-ers, turning his Ripponlea fine diner into a bake shop. The team served Attica’s famous Vegemite scrolls, pull-apart garlic bread, a take on Cherry Ripe and a whole lot more worth lining up for.

But, back in lockdown more than a year later, the chef-owner took to Instagram last night to declare, “BAKE SHOP IS BACK BABY!” (For those within 10 kilometres of Ripplonea.)

From tomorrow – Friday June 4 – the pop-up bake shop will be open daily from 9am until sold out for as long as lockdown lasts, doing all sorts of cakes, tarts, breads and sandwiches. And Shewry will be flanked by Rosemary Andrews, head pastry chef at the just-closed pop-up Attica Summer Camp, who was responsible for these majestic dessert trolleys.

Shewry doesn’t do things by halves, though. He’s also bringing back Attica at Home, which made a splash last year with its $60 family-sized lasagnes.

This time around there are two menus to choose from. The Summer Camp-inspired one is all about the souva: it comes with marinated rotisserie lamb, pillowy house-baked focaccia, garlic yogurt, rice pilaf salad, mixed pickles and a potato salad with hot sauce. There’s also a more luxurious option with baked cheese and honey; beef Wellington with Mac Forbes pinot sauce; mashed turnips and brown butter; greens with a mustardy champagne-spiked dressing; and kladdkaka (a Swedish chocolate cake).

Another lockdown sensation, the Basque burnt cheesecake, is also making a comeback. Attica’s decadent version incorporates three creams – mascarpone, pouring and cream cheese – and feeds eight people.

The Stay Home Summer Camp Souva is $75 for two, the Lockdown Luxe Three-Course Menu is $110 for two and the cheesecake is $70 for eight. Order pick-up or delivery online. Attica Bake Shop opens on Friday June 4.
