If you’re the kind of person who has a sacred bond with your favourite barista at your favourite cafe, you might go as far as to think they’re world-class at what they do.
But now a Melburnian has officially taken out the title of the best barista in the world.
Anthony Douglas – of Axil Coffee Roasters – won the World Barista Championship at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo, which was held from September 27 to 30.

SIGN UPHe’s the first Australian to take out the top prize in seven years, going head-to-head with 47 world-class competitors from across the globe.
“I feel incredibly proud to be named this year’s world champion and am honoured to represent Australia, and more specifically Melbourne, on the world stage,” Douglas said in a statement.
“I couldn’t have done it without the unwavering support and commitment of the team at Axil, who have been by my side inspiring me for the past nine years.”
Over three rounds, Douglas produced four espressos, four milk drinks and four original signature drinks for an international panel of judges, whose criteria includes taste, technicality and presentation. Coffee from El Diviso in Colombia was used throughout.
Among Melbourne’s best coffee roasters, Axil has more than a dozen cafes across city, spanning from the CBD to the airport to Chadstone Shopping Centre.
