It’s no secret that Melbourne is brimming with skilled pastry chefs and dessert pros. While it can be overwhelming to choose, we asked some of Melbourne’s best chefs, including Jung Eun Chae, Jacqui Challinor and Brigitte Hafner, about their favourite desserts and sweets in town right now.

The Flour in North Melbourne and Madeleine de Proust in Carlton. April [Yoonhee Bae] and Ju [Park] are the best at what they do.

I go to Monforte Viennoiserie for the apple custard chausson and to Falco for the divine cardamom buns.

Crepes at Ouest France Bistro in Mornington. Cesar Henry opened a creperie in Mornington pre-Covid, but the pandemic saw him bring his brother to Australia and convert the creperie to a tiny French bistro. The apple crepes remain on the dessert menu, and we love to enjoy them with calvados after a classic steak and frites! Warning: you might not want to share.

La Colmena at Prahran Market is my favourite spot for a sweet fix – their ensaimada is my weakness. It’s a traditional Spanish sourdough pastry, filled with cream and made with so much love you can taste it.

Madeleine de Proust. I never knew that I loved madeleines so much before I tried theirs. There are lots of flavours there, but for me it doesn’t really matter which flavour I choose. The base of the madeleine is so good, so it’s perfect all the time.

Homm Desserts or Meet Fresh are my two picks for dessert. They’re both great on a hot or cold day. I love Meet Fresh for the strawberry or mango snow ice.

It’s not sweet, but we order burgers and champagne from Gimlet. My husband and I had one last Friday. It was so good we split a third for dessert with a Vodka Martini. If the mood strikes, the chocolate mousse with olive oil and salt at Public Wine Shop is divine.
