When Amphlett House opened in the former Mrs Parmas site in November 2022, it promised to bring a slick taphouse with classic pub dishes to Melbourne’s Paris End.

The restaurant, which closed after last weekend’s service and has since deactivated its social media accounts, was part of Little Bourke Street hotel Laneways by Ovolo, a 1980s-inspired boutique hotel that pulls design references from Memphis, Tennessee.

Amphlett House was owned by Ovolo Hotels, the group behind hotels including Nishi Canberra, Ovolo South Yarra and The Woolstore 1888 by Ovolo in Sydney. Several restaurants are also part of the group’s stable, including Lona Misa, Za Za Ta in Brisbane and Monster in Canberra.

Upon opening, Amphlett House’s food and drink offering was led by hospitality heavyweights – chef Ian Curley, who is still part of Ovolo, and drinks whiz Andrea Gualdi, a world-class bartender and the co-founder of Sydney’s Maybe Sammy, who has since moved on from the group.

While Amphlett House struggled to find an audience, Ovolo's senior marketing communications manager Toby Franklin tells Broadsheet an “exciting new venue” will be opening in the space soon.
