“Business can be so boring,” Fluffy Torpedo co-owner Cherry Rainflower tells Broadsheet.

Rainflower and her partner, Adam Semple – a retired ballerina and cyclist, respectively – opened their outlandish Smith Street scoop shop just over a year ago. And if there’s one thing Fluffy Torpedo is not, it’s boring.

The ice-cream parlour quickly got Melburnians talking thanks to its whimsical, offbeat flavours – like Smoked Cherry Ripe, Vegemite and White Chocolate, and Blue Powerade – and Wonka-esque fit-out, with sour-strap-paved floors and burnt-orange details.

Now, a second shop is set to open on Sydney Road, Brunswick, at the beginning of March.

“It’ll be different in colour and feel,” Rainflower says. “It’s all blue, sort of like a pool.” And, she adds, there “are a lot of tiles – and none of them are on the floor.”

The pair are also working on locations in Melbourne CBD; Sydney; and their home state of Western Australia, where they previously worked together at Semple’s Stampede Gelato.

“The plan for all our stores has always been to create a customer experience – which is about far more than just buying an ice-cream – and we’ll always hold this to heart.”

For now, each store will offer the same flavours, all made at the existing Smith Street location. In the weeks ahead, we can look forward to new ones like goat’s milk; blackcurrant and fennel; mandarin; and lime and dark chocolate sorbet.

As Rainflower and Semple’s ice-creamery expands, the duo say they will continue to donate 50 per cent of profits to The Life You Can Save, while investing the other 50 per cent in new openings.

Fluffy Torpedo is expected to open its second shop in March 2024 at 213 Sydney Road, Brunswick, with a CBD location to follow later in the year.
