Celebrated Middle Eastern bakery, cafe and grocery store Oasis has been a Murrumbeena staple for almost 25 years.

In 2018, it opened a second store to coincide with its 20th birthday, expanding to Station Street in Fairfield. And now it’s making its way to the Mornington Peninsula.

It’s opening a Middle Eastern superstore in Mornington Central shopping centre, on Barkly Street, midyear.

The centre is undergoing a huge refurb, and its Target store has been decommissioned and subdivided. Oasis will be one of the key new tenants – right next to Woolworths.

Unlike the Murrumbeena and Fairfield outlets, Oasis’ third store will strictly be a supermarket – there’ll be no cafe offering. But at close to 700 square metres, general manager Ely Makool says it’ll be bigger than the Murrumbeena location (including the cafe).

“We’ll have all the things people know and love,” Makool says – house-baked breads, pastries, dips, spices and more – “but a much bigger offering when it comes to the bakery, meats, everyday essentials and other produce.”

The first Oasis opened in the late ’90s, when Emad and Marwa Makool took over what was then a fledgling business. Enthusiastically supported by three generations of their family, it’s been transformed into one of the city’s finest Middle Eastern food stores.

Oasis is slated to open 78 Barkly Street, Mornington midyear.
