Since 2015, Tokyo Tina has been a topnotch Japanese option on the Windsor end of Chapel Street, complete with a karaoke booth, peeling manga posters and retro Japanese signage.
But owner Commune Group – also behind Firebird, New Quarter, and Hanoi Hannah in Windsor and Elsternwick – has unveiled a suave new addition to the restaurant: Tokyo Private, a low-lit private dining room with space for you and 27 mates (post-lockdown).
It’s next door to Tokyo Tina in what was once the Commune Group office. Now, though, it’s decked out with curved joinery, burgundy accents and a 6.5-metre burl-timber table in the centre. Intended to emulate a lavish ’70s-era Japanese train carriage, it came together with help from local architect Ewert Leaf and design agency Space Between.

SIGN UPThe experience will be one where everything’s taken care of. The seasonal $80-a-head set menu will include dishes like “devilled ramen eggs” with spanner crab and avocado mousse, crispy rice cakes with spicy tuna tartare, and whole steamed fish with bonito-and-dashi butter. As for booze, go by-the-glass or opt for a curated drinks package.
“This project was a long time coming, but we are thrilled that our loyal regulars and new diners can settle in, get well fed and get loose,” Commune Group creative director, Simon Blacher, said in a statement. Importantly, your booking also includes complimentary karaoke, so you can belt out some bangers from around the table.
