Some sad news for south-siders whose local is Hotel Max. Just this week chef and owner Brendon Mitchell was given notice that the landlords would not be proceeding with a new lease, despite an agreement on plans to resign. It comes rather suddenly and a shock to many, with the Max’s final day of trade this Sunday, 7 November. But, as Mitchell states, “there is nothing I can do, we are out on our arse.”

Mitchell has owned the Hotel Max for over five years, when he undertook a redesign on the rundown old man’s pub with his wife Kate Krauss-Mitchell, also a chef. Together they transformed the local watering hole into a gastro pub with a classic old-world style dining room serving French cuisine and a bistro/front bar with one of the best selections of foreign and local micro brew beers in Melbourne.

No doubt we’ll be hearing more from Mitchell and Krauss-Mitchell soon though, “I’m looking for another venue…I’ll try to stay as local as I can,” he notes reassuringly.

In the meantime head down to Hotel Max (32 Commercial Road, Prahran) this Sunday to have one last brew to celebrate the pub's testimonial day.
