Last year, classic Carlton deli King & Godfree turned 150. We traced the Italian institution’s rise to icon status in a special feature full of colourful stories, and the team celebrated the milestone by releasing a cookbook called The Corner Grocer with countless other tales – and more than 100 treasured family recipes.

The latest development for the eatery on the corner of Lygon and Faraday streets is the launch of a new breakfast and brunch offering on weekends from 9am.

Naturally, it’s decidedly Italian. The avo toast is topped with a generous grating of pecorino; a soft scramble is accompanied by mortadella and melty scamorza in a panino; and the buttermilk waffles come with a tiramisu-y coffee-spiked mascarpone.

You’ll also find sourdough with ricotta, honey and marmalade, and a big green brekkie bowl with all sorts of healthy seasonal goodness, plus a wad of crisp haloumi.

Want to make it boozy? Add on a classic Bloody Mary or Mimosa (made with freshly squeezed orange juice) or the Forza Garibaldi (a mix of Campari, Amaro Braulio and OJ).

King & Godfree serves brunch on weekends from 9am to 3pm.
