Victoria’s Country Cob Bakery has taken home the coveted prize for Australia’s best pie at the Baking Association of Australia’s annual pie and pastie competition, which was held in Sydney over the weekend.

There were almost 2000 entries from more than 300 Aussie bakeries across dozens of categories. But after three days of serious pie and pastie tasting, the judges declared brothers Ryan and Chan Khun’s flaky pepper-beef pie the winner.

This is the third year in a row their bakery has snagged the top spot. It won for its caramelised pork and pepper pie last year and for its seafood-satay pie in 2018.

The bakery – which has stores in Kyneton (a country town north-east of Melbourne) and Boronia (in Melbourne's eastern suburbs) – also won big in four other categories: Australia’s best plain beef pie; best gourmet pie (for the barbequed pork and quail egg creation); best flavoured beef pie (another win for the pepper-beef); and best vegetarian or vegan pie (for the curried cauliflower, lentil and chickpea).

Another Victorian bakery, JoJo’s Gluten-Free Goodies in Kernot, took home the title of Australia’s Best Pastie for its roasted-vegetable version.
