It’s the end of the road for The Pie Shop, which has been quietly making some of Melbourne’s best pies for half a decade.
Having opened in 2017 on the site of a small grocery shop on Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, the locally loved spot – by chef and former Pope Joan owner Matt Wilkinson – has announced it will close down later this month.
“Our journey in Brunswick East is about to end,” the team wrote on Instagram today. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, we’ve been ushered on from what has been our home for the last [five] years … It’s with sadness that we will be closing up The Pie Shop on Grand Final day.”

SIGN UPThe only upside: we’ll be able to get one last footy pie before it closes for good.
Despite the shop’s humble name, Wilkinson – who’s currently creative director at Four Pillars and culinary director at Montalto winery – makes no ordinary pies. And he’s been known to get inventive with flavours.
Past creations have included the golden brown, crimped-edged Daryl pie, filled with curried turkey, sweet potato and spinach; the Bruce, a pork-based spaghetti bolognaise (pasta and all) in a pastry bowl that’s baked with melted cheddar and mozzarella in lieu of crust; and the Clancy, a vegetarian Middle Eastern mix with pumpkin, Swiss chard and haloumi cooked inside pizza dough, much like a calzone.
The classics, though, include the Allen, with slow-cooked beef; the Shazza, a mix of cauliflower, leek and cheddar; and the And Brian, with mushroom and Gruyere.
The Pie Shop will close on Saturday September 25 at 2pm. Until then, pre-orders are available online.
