The OG Umberto Espresso Bar is back in business – for a limited time only.

Early last year, the Thornbury favourite relocated from its tiny home at 822 High Street to a sprawling three-level site at 917 High Street, just 100 metres up the road. And added rooftop bar Gigi.

But now, back where it all began, the Umberto team has opened a pop-up wine bar called Pezzo with specialist Italian (and Croatian) wine importer Quelvino.

From now until Christmas, the joint venture will be serving interesting lo-fi Italian wines alongside some more conventional options – to sip on-site or at home. Think gutsy orange from Nista; bright, textural pét-nats; and zesty nero d’avolas.

And, of course, there are snacks. Hunks of house-made focaccia come with one of three toppings: whipped baccala; mortadella mousse with pistachio and fermented honey; or free-range pork lardo (infused with black garlic) and rosemary. Plus, salumi plates with bresaola and The Meat Room’s prosecco salami.
