Ima Project Cafe, on Elgin Street in Carlton, is one of Melbourne’s standard-bearers for Japanese breakfast. Almost every weekend, there’s a line out the door of people waiting to feast on its teishoku – a set meal of fish, rice, miso soup and pickles. It’s exquisite.
But, from January 1, the Carlton shopfront will close as Ima relocates to Brunswick.
“It’s been a wild ride,” the team wrote on Instagram. “We would like to thank everyone who has visited our humble little shop over the years, and to all our staff past and present for your dedication and hard work.”

The petite Carlton cafe will be open for the rest of the year – save Christmas Day and Boxing Day – also serving excellent donburi, toasties and soba salads. “So please come down and bid farewell to our much-loved corner site. We’d love to see you!”
Ima Project Cafe is closing in Carlton on January 1 and reopening in Brunswick in early 2023.
