At the Baking Association of Australia’s annual pie and pastie competition, which was held in Sydney last week, Victoria’s Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes took out the title of Australia’s best pie.

After the judges ploughed their way through thousands of entries by hundreds of Aussie bakeries, they decided Rolling Pin’s surf’n’turf pie – channelling the room-dividing, two-pronged Aussie pub classic – was best on ground.

Enveloped in a neat little pastry package is the bakery’s signature chunky beef topped with prawns in a rich garlicky, creamy sauce.

The out-of-town bakery, which also won medals for more than a dozen of its other pastries, is based in the seaside town of Ocean Grove on the Bellarine Peninsula, but it also has locations in nearby Queenscliff and Leopold. (Get there as soon as lockdown restrictions allow.)

Last year’s winner of the coveted prize, Country Cob Bakery, couldn’t make it four wins a row in 2021. But it did manage to take out five of the other top spots, including best mince beef pie, mushroom pie and vegetarian pie.
