Best Rooftop Bars in Melbourne

Drinks taste better at high altitude. We don’t have any scientific proof for this statement, but sipping on a cocktail at one of Melbourne’s many rooftop bars presents some pretty compelling anecdotal evidence.

But if there's one thing we know for sure, it's that Melbourne knows how to do a rooftop bar better than any other Australian city. Whether you’re looking to perch high above the city or gaze out to sea, we’ve got one for every style, occasion and price point. What do they all have in common? Good drinks, fresh air and a killer view at golden hour. These are our favourites around town.

Looking for something specific?

  • The Arbory team's most ambitious project to date consists of multiple levels, experiences and global flavours. Of course, it wouldn't be complete without this jewel in the crown: an open-air oasis serving fruit-forward cocktails, natural wines and barbequed snacks from Her's signature Thai eatery, BKK.

  • Meet Melbourne’s quintessential CBD rooftop bar. It’s appeared in films, has great views, and serves damn fine burgers. And in summers past, it’s morphed into an open-air cinema showing cult films and blockbusters.

  • Named after a Tom Petty album – and rocking an appropriate soundtrack – Lulie’s Cali-inspired rooftop bar is all sun, stone and succulents. Head upstairs for zesty cocktails from a cactus-shaped dispenser and a riff on the Hungry Jack’s Whopper.

  • The crown jewel of the King and Godfree complex. A visit here comes with amazing views towards Carlton and the CBD, backed up by a menu of modern Italian fare and summer-ready drinks. It’s all tied together by a soundtrack of Italo disco tunes.

  • A three-storey Italian joint geared for good times. Head to the first floor for a woodfired pizza feast, or up again to the public bar for lambrusco and pool. The rooftop is one of the city’s best spots to drink with a view.

  • Naked In The Sky is where you bring friends from out of town. Sure, there’s always a crowd, not to mention the added uncertainty of actually getting a seat. But this place has some truly gobsmacking panoramas of the city that are absolutely worth showing off. The excellent food and drinks are just a bonus.

  • It's hard to describe this place. Is it a karaoke bar? Is it a dumpling joint? Is it a great rooftop bar? Yes, to all of the above. Either way, odds are you'll find yourself with a barbeque pork bao in one hand and a mic in the other at some point during an evening here.

  • Soak up the sunset above one of the city’s favourite (relocated) Italian restaurants, with a pina colada punch in one hand and a cheesy ‘nduja soldier in the other. And if you’re still hungry, you can always nip downstairs for a bowl of orecchiette with broccoli and anchovies.

  • Thirteen floors up, the stunning venue boasts uninterrupted city views and a retractable roof for year-round dining. Inspired by its heritage, it’s serving Greek-inspired fare from an ex-Press Club chef.

  • This extravagant rooftop is best described as a cross between a garden party and a country club bar – on top of a skyscraper in the middle of the city. Madame Brussels is famously over-the-top, and it revels in it. Come here for big spritz jugs and a signature poached chicken sandwich.

  • Head to the sunny, fruit-tree-filled rooftop above Collingwood Yards for wallet-friendly wines and cocktails, plus a superlative view that won’t cost you a thing. Cap it off with rotating DJ sets through a killer sound system, and you’ve got plenty of reasons to stick around.

  • This Palm Springs-inspired rooftop has room for 400 punters. If you’re chasing a very good Martini or Whiskey Sour in the CBD, this place has you covered. It also serves a tight selection of low-and-slow American barbeque, courtesy of Fancy Hank’s downstairs.

  • A bright modern boozer with plenty of fun across three levels. Head to the rooftop for pub fare, city views and the odd drag brunch. Or down to the basement cocktail bar, a function space with room for up to 160.

  • Above ambitious (and ridiculously pretty) cocktail bar Bouvardia, this colourful rooftop has the same inventive streak as its sibling downstairs, but dials up the fun with house-made seltzers, boozy slushies and park-ready wines.

  • After a profound redevelopment, this legendary seaside pub and music venue is in the best shape of its long and colourful life. Head upstairs to the breezy rooftop terrace for fun signature cocktails and a big community vibe.

  • Perched high above Hotel Fitzroy, this timber-clad bar is the perfect place to kick off an evening on Brunswick Street. The cocktail list is classic, the wines are affordable and Ichi Ni Nana downstairs will ferry sushi and Japanese pub-style snacks to your table.

  • Secure a spot at this chic, art deco rooftop bar and soak up golden hour with your hands around an overflowing lobster-and-prawn roll. To reach the space, you need to scale a striking staircase inside an historic former dairy.

  • Loop has been a pillar of the Melbourne arts community since 2003. While the original downstairs events and exhibition space is no more, the rooftop bar is very much alive and kicking.

  • You can choose your own adventure at Bomba. Come for tapas and imported Spanish wines at the restaurant downstairs, or escape to the fifth-floor rooftop for cocktails and Hope Street Radio DJs every Friday and Saturday. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

  • It may not be the highest rooftop bar in town. Nor is there much of a view, for that matter. But this world-class, open-air cocktail bar does have an enormous library of gins, juicy house drinks and a fun hip-hop soundtrack to make up for its height.

  • This three-level pub – which has stood for more than 150 years – is one of Melbourne’s best. It’s an ideal spot for a feed or knock-off pint, whether you’re in the front bar, upstairs in the dining room, or soaking rays on the rooftop.

  • This warm and inviting pub is renowned for two reasons. First, it's got one of the most vegan-friendly menus in Melbourne. And second, its sunny and expansive rooftop bar ranks among the best in Brunswick.

  • You’re not a live music fan in Melbourne unless you’ve been to the Corner. The room – and its infamous solitary column – is rightfully an icon. But did you know it also has a killer rooftop and beer garden upstairs?

  • Fancy a no-nonsense burger served five storeys up inside an old-school train carriage? This place – and only this place – is for you. Easey’s doesn't coast by on its looks alone, though. These are some of the best burgers you’ll find anywhere in town. The view is pretty great, too.

  • Upstairs at the St Kilda Sea Baths, Captain Baxter sits as a ship’s captain would, staring out over the open waters of Port Phillip Bay. It’s set within a space that feels like a 1920s bungalow in the Bahamas – with a fun drinks list and a seafood-centric menu to match.

  • This rooftop bar above the Melbourne Supper Club has unrivalled views over Spring Street. It’s also one of the few CBD spots with a cigar menu (and humidor with hard-to-find Cubans). If smoking’s not your style, the cocktails will be.

  • Another polished pub by the Marquis of Lorne crew. As at its sibling spots, there are plenty of spaces to settle in, including a downstairs bar with craft and classic beers, a dining room with pub and bistro menus, and a rooftop.

  • If you love beer, a visit to The Local Taphouse is non-negotiable. It’s influenced by European taverns in the 1930s, and has one of the most curated beer lists in the country. Pair those drinks with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere – both inside and on the rooftop – and you have a craft beer destination worth travelling for.

  • An Italian mega-venue sprawling across four storeys of a late-1800s building. Get your golden-hour cocktail fix on the rooftop, then head downstairs to the golden-lit trattoria for pizza made from a family recipe. Or a barrel-aged Negroni in the cocktail bar.

  • This former Commonwealth Bank branch is now 200-seat double-level bar. Come here for classic pub grub and beers. It's also well known for its rooftop terrace, which plays host to bottomless brunches during the day and boozy cocktail session in the evenings.

  • Nab a spot on the terrazzo-tiled terrace for grown-up Espresso Martinis and an Italian homage to the KFC Zinger burger. All from the man behind Il Bacaro, Sarti and Bar Carolina.

  • At 24 storeys high, this bar and diner boasts some of the finest views of Melbourne, extending from the CBD as far as the Dandenong Ranges. The retractable glass rooftop ensures you can enjoy its Cali-cool style and al fresco dining all year round.

  • Settle into the minimalist dining room, or take a seat on the rooftop, at this lively Latin-inspired eatery. Go for smoky bite-sized arepas, slow-cooked chargrilled seafood and three kinds of tostadas. Plus, more than 50 types of tequila and mezcal.

  • Sip Martinis while overlooking 360-degree views of Melbourne, indulge in classic pizzas and pillowy house-made gnocchi or descend into the neon-lit basement for a signature late-night cheeseburger.
