Austro Bakery
Features
Austro is one of Melbourne’s most beloved bakeries, and it was a sad day for South Melbourne when owners Sally Roxon and Christian Gattermayr closed the Cecil Street original. They pair have since brought their Austrian-inspired baked goods to the north side, setting up production in the old Beatrix warehouse and offering retail items a few days per week.
As ever, you’ll find slabs of fluffy focaccia, croissants, maritozzi (Italian sweet cream buns) filled with fruit preserves, and karpatka, a Polish cream pie the team described as an eclair cake. The space is just as restrained as the original Austro, with little more than a coat of Yves Klein Blue paint and a wooden backdrop behind the counter.
