Licorice Pie Records

Walking through Licorice Pie Records’ unassuming front door is like entering Championship Vinyl in High Fidelity. Though usually just manned by proprietor David Reitman, it’s likely you’ll happen upon some serious music banter.

But unlike the fictional store full of intimidating music nerds, Licorice Pie is a welcoming place for both fanatics and first-timers.

Visitors are immediately met with rows upon rows of records – close to 15,000 at last count – all neatly arranged and catalogued, occasionally with handwritten signs and notes. A quick survey reveals rockabilly, Australian garage and Krautrock – and that’s just the beginning. Their motto is, after all, ‘We stock all sorts’.

Specialising in rare and classic releases from the past 60 years, they stock LPs, 12”s, 45s and even some 78s (but no CDs, thank you very much).

With new stock arriving weekly, this store makes for a carefully curated music-lover’s haven, with prices ranging from $4 to $30, or more for something very special.

Licorice Pie is a fine destination, but don’t just take our word for it. Music royalty such as Henry Rollins, Afrika Bambaataa, Billy Corgan and Thurston Moore have all paid a visit.
