Sitting opposite the South Melbourne Market, an old supermarket-turned-kitchenware-retailer Chef’s Hat has been supplying the city’s cafes and restaurants with kitchen and dining equipment since 1996.

For chefs, bartenders and waiters (and home cooks), Chef’s Hat is a paradise. At this two-storey emporium, aisles are packed to the brim with goods such as plates, cutlery and glassware. Le Creuset pots sit next to wooden cheese boards and chopping blocks, sushi knives, KitchenAid mixers and commercial-grade kitchen equipment at wholesale prices. Chef’s Hat is one of the rare places that service public and commercial buyers at the same time.

Though everything can be bought online, the team here can give you advice and show you the ins and outs of how a particular machine works. We’re talking everything from Dutch Ovens to Magimixes and deep fryers and burr grinders.
