Le Splendide
Melbourne wouldn't be Melbourne without France-Soir. The enduring restaurant boasts one of the most extensive French wine lists in Melbourne, and has been delivering authentic staples – from steak tartare to crème brûlée – since 1986.
It took owner Jean-Paul Prunetti 38 years to open Le Splendide next door. Behind clandestine burgundy drapes, find 40 seats, red carpets, buttery lighting and a chic zinc bar where smartly attired staff mix classic cocktails and pour Kronenbourg from the tap.
The wine list is full of renowned names, with a lean towards natural production. Expect Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, chardonnay from Burgundy sub-regions Cote de Beaune and Cote Chalonnaise, and even a Châteauneuf-du-Pape from southern Rhône.
There's no kitchen, but the small menu of grignotages (snacks) prepared behind the bar lists foie gras, salmon gravlax with crème fraiche, Marcel Petite comté, Russian Oscietra caviar and more.
As at the mothership, food and drink are only part of the appeal. It’s Le Splendide’s ambience and charm that keep people coming back. Prunetti keeps that carefully protected, too. Putting a supplied heart-shaped sticker over your phone camera is a requirement of entry, to ensure everyone stays firmly in the present.
