Since 2012, Candied Bakery has become one of the most popular west-side bakeries – particularly loved for its American-style cakes and Philly cheesesteaks. In July, husband-and-wife owners Orlando Artavilla and Toula Ploumidis shuffled to a bigger spot down the road. The new bakery has plenty of room to dine in, as well as a fresh European-leaning pastry offering (think Russian honey cakes and tiramisu croissants).

Candied Bakery is an American-inspired bakehouse by husband-wife duo Orlando Artavilla and Toula Ploumidis. After a research trip to the United States, the couple – who owned Sugardough Panificio and Patisserie at the time – felt invigorated to open another spot inspired by their travels.

The menu includes American classics such as key lime and bourbon pecan pies, as well as house-made, soft-serve ice cream. But you’ll also find European influence in the rotating pastry menu, which might include Russian honey cakes, tiramisu croissants, chocolate babkas and vanilla slice doughnuts.

To satiate your savoury cravings, Candied Bakery also offers char siu pork sausage rolls, jalapeño and cheddar fougasse, marinated olive loaves, and even “super sanga” bread for you to take home and assemble your own sandwich.

You can just as easily stick around. The bakery is located in the former home of Two Birds Brewing and, from the outside, the retro, dual-toned brick exterior and double red doors make Candied Bakery look like an American grade school.

Inside, it features a table tennis table and basketball hoop, making the bakery feel like a playground while you wait for your coffee or pastry. Plus, you can watch the pros laminate dough, put icing on cakes, stuff pies and score bread through a glass window.

The main thing you’ll learn here? How to hold a coffee, eat your chocolate-pretzel brownie and maybe even shoot a few hoops.
