Capers
Capers is a laidback neighbourhood bar that serves up Greek-style comfort food and drinks, paying homage to the Greek community stalwarts along High Street.
Cousins Christian Evripidou and Anastasios Konnari’s opened Capers in 2019, inspired by their yiayia’s house in Cyprus – from the comforting share plates and retro styling to the Greek and Middle Eastern music.
The concise Greek-Cypriot menu consists of family recipes and regional comfort foods. You might fill your table with smaller share plates, like pickled calamari and dolmades, or go straight for standout mains like the vegan moussaka with layers of roasted veg, house-made tomato sauce and dairy-free bechamel; a light and fluffy spanakorizo with pickles and house-made bread; and a pastisio (Greek pasta bake) with pork bolognese sauce, cinnamon and creamy bechamel.
Elsewhere on the menu, you’ll find cocktails including the crowd-favourites Greek Salad Martini and Mastic Sour, alongside classics like a Negroni or Margarita. There’s also a tight list of classic Greek beers including Mythos, Alfa and Fix, as well as Greek wines including a rosé, a chilled red and fortified Cypriot dessert wine. Plus, coffee and herbal tea served late into the night.
The fit-out, much like the menu, is comforting and unpretentious. There’s a courtyard flanked by lush bamboo and filled with vinyl chairs, mid-century sofas and retro umbrellas. Much of it was donated by friends or brought in from grandparents’ houses. Good hospitality runs in the family – Evripidou’s parents have operated the neighbouring restaurant, GRK Greek Kitchen and Bar, since 2015.
Capers is a place where people can gather, whether to read a book, play cards or share a meal. It might even feel like an extension of your own living room (or your yiayia’s).
