Tuckers Sandwiches

Tuckers Sandwiches is a nostalgic, mostly takeaway spot offering loaded sangas, sweets, coffee and milkshakes. The site was once home to a milk bar, which was operated by the Tucker family in the ’50s and ’60s. Its modern iteration leans in to this history through old-school aesthetics and souped-up yet classic sandwiches. Co-owned by expat chef Jon Ford, originally from Liverpool, UK, the corner spot is decked out with a milk carton colour scheme, subway tiles and retro branding.

The focus is on providing simple sangas, made well. Early on, go for its breakfast two-handers. Think bagels piled with folded egg, pecorino, chives and truffle-spiked mayo, or the hangover-friendly Motha Tucka, a Turkish bread roll that packs in bacon, sausage, folded egg, a hash brown and more.

Lunch-appropriate options are divided into hot and cold and might include the hot Buffalo fried chicken sanga with American cheddar, greens and dill pickles, or a straight-up ham and salad roll. Add sides of salt-and-vinegar waffle fries and hash browns with baked-bean mayo to dial up the nostalgia.

Alongside sandwiches, Tuckers is known for its milkshakes (or Shilling Shakes), another echo of its milk bar roots. Plus, find hot and iced coffee, Strangelove soda and bottled kombucha. While mainly operating as a take-away joint, there are a few seats inside and out. If you get caught in the lunch rush, you can appreciate its sleek retro exterior from the picnic tables out front.
