Know someone with big ideas?

The Mercedes-Benz Design Award by Broadsheet is back for its second year, again aiming to bring a unique new Australian design to homes and cafes around the country. Or should we say gardens and courtyards?

This year the award will be given to an innovative design that adds value to a revered part of Australian life: outdoor dining. Whether it’s for garden barbeques, courtyard dinner parties, or for a restaurant balcony overlooking the ocean, the winning design will enhance this much-loved ritual.

To bring the design to life, we’ve teamed up with Tait, the company that best represents the pinnacle of Australian outdoor-furniture design and manufacturing. The winning piece will be produced by Tait to sit within its range and be available to the public to buy. The winner will also receive mentoring from the Tait design team.

“We absolutely jumped at the chance to partner this year’s Broadsheet Design Awards," says Tait managing director, Gordon Tait. "We're forever supportive of working with Australia’s future design talent, and thrilled that we can impart our industry experience by mentoring and working with the winner of the award.

“Being local manufacturers, this award is perfect for us to partner with. We can respond to the market and move quickly from choosing the winning entry to manufacturing the finished product.”

The Award will be judged by representatives from Mercedes-Benz, Tait and Broadsheet, and is open to everyone. You don’t have to be an established designer; you just need a good idea.

Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with design and innovation, and this year the award is a celebration of its newest, design focused vehicle, the GLC Coupe.

“Mercedes-Benz passionately believes in design that fulfills its purpose and practically demonstrates just what is achievable,” says Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesperson David McCarthy. “For more than 130 years Mercedes-Benz has produced, fostered and curated creative design. The winning design will have to be affordable and best in class for innovation.”

We regularly feature incredible local design on Broadsheet, so we’re particularly proud to play a part in bringing an innovative new design to the world. Think it could be a design of yours? There’s only one way to find out.
