In a press conference on Tuesday morning, Queensland’s premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced that the Sunshine State will completely open its border to NSW on December 1.
The news comes after NSW recorded 28 days with no “unlinked” cases of coronavirus. “All of their cases since then have been linked and able to be to traced back to known outbreaks,” Queensland’s chief health officer, Doctor Jeannette Young, said in the press conference.
Victorians will also be able to travel freely to Queensland from December 1, as long as the state also hits that 28-day threshold (which has occurred, after zero new cases were recorded on November 25).
“I hope this is welcome news,” Palaszczuk said. “I think it’s great news in the lead-up to Christmas, but once again, that timely reminder for everybody: we need to make sure that we continue to keep up our social distancing.”
