Nine years after she performed at the Super Bowl, the US pop star is taking to the field again – and we just hope the left shark makes a comeback.

The 2024 AFL grand final is set to pop off like a Firework with a pre-game performance by US pop royalty Katy Perry.

“I’m so excited to be back in Australia and back at the mighty MCG to perform in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final,” Perry said in a statement. “See you in September Oi Oi Oi!”

Oi oi oi indeed!

Katy Perry is no stranger to performances in the sporting domain, having performed at the NFL Super Bowl in 2015 to a roaring (pun intended) crowd in a show that reportedly brought in 118.5 million views, and gave us the much-memed “left shark”.

And while some Instagram commenters were left scratching their chins at the pairing, Australia has a proud history of roping megastars into our cultural moments. Who can forget Taylor Swift almost performing at the Melbourne Cup or the time Dua Lipa was randomly on a 2016 episode of The Bachelorette? Hell, just yesterday G-Flip and Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause renewed their vows at Moon Dog Wild West in Footscray.

See you in September, Katy!

The AFL Grand Final will take place at the MCG on Saturday September 28.
