The department-store giant is highlighting brands that adhere to five sustainability principles on an easy-to-use hub. Find out which ones are Aussie-made, responsibly sourced, cruelty free and more.

Shopping sustainably and ethically is now easier than ever, with more and more brands making it part of their DNA. But David Jones is making it even simpler for you to identify the steps your favourite fashion, beauty, food and homewares brands are taking to be more responsible.

Earlier this month the department-store giant launched the “Mindfully Made” initiative, and it’s now listing brands that adhere to one (or more) of its five new sustainability principles on an easy-to-use online hub.

The principles include “Australian Made”, which puts the spotlight on brands that manufacture at home, including RM Williams, Nobody Denim, Bassike, Dinosaur Designs and Grown Alchemist; “Community Minded”, which focuses on transparency and worker welfare, including labels such as Country Road and Arnsdorf; and “Sourced With Care”, which highlights responsible sourcing across all links of the supply chain, as shown by KitX, Veja and Bellroy.

In the “Reduce and Recycle” category you’ll find brands such as Nudie Jeans, Bianca Spender and Keepcup, which focus on sustainable manufacturing and minimising environmental impact, while “Kind to Animals” highlights cruelty-free companies such as Budapest-based fashion label Nanushka, Aussie skincare company Edible Beauty and vegan handbag label Sans Beast.

“We recognise our responsibility to drive positive change in the industry and are in a unique position to highlight brands making meaningful progress in this space,” David Jones’s head of sustainability Eloise Bishop said in a statement.

“Increasingly, our customers seek greater insight into where and how their favourite brands are manufactured, and Mindfully Made’s objective is to support customers in making informed shopping choices.”

The online hub also has sections with information about prolonging the life of your purchases, and explanations of the often-confusing terminology used to describe sustainable and ethical practices.

Access the Mindfully Made Hub online or shop the edit at select David Jones stores.
