Plush velvet, shearling-lined and felted finishes give these shoes cosy yet chic appeal.

Okay yes, there’s been noticeable movement towards a return to glamour when it comes to our shoe-robes of late. Kitten heels are trending (again). Ballet flats are back. And boots are sleeker than ever this season. But when the mornings are cold and dark, there’s nothing better than a pair of slippers that will take you further than your coffee machine. And while wearing your uggs out of the house remains a divisive topic, we’ve rounded up the chicest pairs of comfort-first shoes that can be worn around town.

Shearling
New Zealand brand Deadly Ponies has launched its first full footwear collection this season, including a pair of shearling slides that wouldn’t be out of place on your morning commute. Simply add some socks to keep your toes toasty as the temps drop. In a similar vein, Hommey’s Willow and Poppy styles, as well as Country Road’s Teddy slip-ons, have rubber outsoles for traction and durability.
The Yoko from LMS and Bared’s Snuggling slingbacks speak the language of cosy-chic fluently. And of course there’s the shearling-lined Birkenstock club – it doesn’t matter if you’re team Arizona or Boston.

Velvet
Monte’s signature velvet pairs are finished with leather soles, which means you can wear them down to the pub or to the post office (the Melbourne brand also offers up a felted version this season). And Sydney-based brand Alex and Trahanas stocks Vibi Venezia’s timeless Venetian slippers – stories say that the gondolieri wore plush velvet slippers with rubber soles (traditionally made from old bicycle tyres) so as not to ruin their gondolas.

Clogs
Not a slipper per se, but Crocs clogs were deemed house shoes by many – until recently. Now it's perfectly acceptable, if not encouraged, to wear the iconic styles (updated with jibbitz or not) into the ether. Meanwhile, Birkenstock puts a felted finish on its favourite Boston silhouette if you’re not into the shearling-lined iteration.
