As soft tailoring continues to take over our wardrobes, waistcoats are working their way into top spot. Here are 14 pieces to shop and style this season.

It’s funny how just one thing can make a wardrobe feel brand new. As resort collections trickle into stores, it can be hard to separate what’s shiny and new from what really feels like you. But the summer vest appears to be more than just a passing trend – think of it as the answer to your beloved blazer-and-jeans combo as the temperatures start to climb. Best worn with wide-leg denim, silk slip skirts or tailored shorts, we’ve rounded up 14 waistcoat-inspired styles to try on for size.

Longline silhouettes bring feminine appeal to traditional suiting styles. Marle’s Leo design comes in black and beige with a subtle V neckline. The Instagram-famous Emma style from Posse is currently sold out in butter yellow linen but also comes in black. Friends with Frank’s pinstriped Gabrielle vest follows a similar curved hem silhouette. P Johnson’s white silk style is cut with a relaxed fit – it also comes in brown wool crepe for a more structured take. And St Agni’s Helm halter neck is giving “business at the front, party in the back” vibes.

If you’re looking for cropped proportions to wear with high-rise waists, Arnsdorf’s Agnes style has classic lines. Camilla and Marc offers the fitted Atlanta vest, as well as a slightly oversized boxy fit with the Danica silhouette. Sir delivers two new-season styles that are finished with traditional detailing: the Dario and Dune vests – the signature Clemence in black is also a crowd favourite. Meanwhile, the Sydney label’s Leni bodice and Faithfull the Brand’s Maya vest feature square necklines that soften the sleeveless profile. Beare Park – the designer behind the Matlidas’ off-field uniforms – crafts a minimalist style that is currently on sale – there a few sizes left in black.
