From May 31 to June 2, the Baking Association of Australia’s annual pie and pasty competition was held in Melbourne.
An enthusiastic panel of judges ate its way through thousands of entries by hundreds of Aussie bakeries at the three-day event, and – for the second year running – Victoria’s Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes took out the title of Australia’s best pie.
In 2021, it won for its surf’n’turf pie – channelling the room-dividing, two-pronged Aussie pub classic – with chunky beef and prawns in a rich garlicky sauce.
But this year’s winner is a little less polarising. It’s a creamy, earthy mushroom-and-truffle pie that couldn’t be any more appropriate for the cold snap we’re experiencing.
Rolling Pin is based in the Victorian seaside town of Ocean Grove on the Bellarine Peninsula, but it also has locations in nearby Queenscliff and Leopold.
