Anyone who’s ever made their own almond (or oat, soy or rice) milk knows it’s a chore. The soaking, the draining, the blending, the straining – there’s a reason we buy it in Tetra Paks. But from the cost of a carton to questions around sustainability and additives or preservatives, it’s an imperfect solution.
Melbourne brand Nutmixr launched in August 2023 with an electric milk maker. According to the brand you can “milk absolutely anything” – cue Meet The Parents reference.
Co-founder Ken Liew told Broadsheet he and his partner wanted a solution to the time consuming and labour-intensive process of at-home alternative milk making. “Growing up we always had a soy milk machine at home. But it was this massive, stainless-steel box that sat on the counter … really cumbersome and heavy,” Liew says.
The core functions of the Nutmixr Milk Maker are blending and heating. You can use both modes beyond milk making: for smoothies and even cups of tea if you want to further streamline your kitchen counter.
There’s no need to pre-soak ingredients. Pop raw almonds, oats, soy beans, rice and other ingredients like salt, honey or cinnamon straight into the hold, add water and choose the appropriate setting. The oat and almond milk setting takes five minutes to blend into milk. Soy and rice take 30 minutes because of the cooking time. Pour through the strainer and serve immediately, or use the “keep warm” or “boil” function to get your milk to the right temperature.
The Nutmixr makes a single 350-millilitre serve to reduce waste. The process is designed to be fast and convenient so you can make fresh milk each day, so there’s no need for preservatives. A 90-second self-clean setting adds to the device’s ease.
