First Look: Aussie Furniture Label Koala Launches a Baby and Kids’ Range

The Joey collection brings clever adaptable design, and warm timber curves, to the nursery.

Mattress-in-a-box pioneer Koala has gotten bigger in recent years, adding sofas, desks, storage and textiles to its furniture line-up. Now it’s getting smaller with Joey, a new baby and kids’ range that’s all about safety and comfort (plus easy cleaning).

The Sydney-designed collection features cots, beds and mattresses suitable for infants through to tweens – plus a handle-less chest of drawers made to deter small ones from climbing up and crashing down.

In good news for parents who’ve had enough of DIY, Koala’s baby cot is tool-free and designed to assemble in under 10 minutes. And it meets the Red Nose Australia Safe Sleeping criteria for reducing risk of sudden infant death – as does the baby mattress, which also boasts a removable, washable cover and water-resistant barrier.

For bigger kids, the Joey bed is adaptable over time, with adjustable leg height and a removable bedhead cover – plus optional guard rails for safety. A matching mattress with low-profile 15-centimetre height is designed to work with bunks, trundles and single beds.

And for nursery storage there’s the solid timber Wombat chest of drawers. No knobs or handles – to deter clambering – and topped with an easy-to-clean surface.

For Koala chief commercial officer Rory Costello, the Joey collection is as much about making things easy for parents as it is keeping kids safely tucked up at night. “We… offer a product that not only supports the physical needs of children, but also the emotional needs of parents, by making their parenting journey a more comfortable one.”

Joey is available online from today.
