If you’re allergic to feather and down or have other aversions to the material, it can be hard to find bedding that is soft and fluffy. A lot of the options out there are made from polyester, which can be sweaty (synthetic fibres don't circulate air as well as natural alternatives), lumpy and not-so-dreamy thanks to its poor sustainability credentials.
Melbourne brand Sheet Society has just launched a new range of plant-based pillows and quilts. The Cloud Corn collection uses a fill derived from corn husk. It is biodegradable, hypoallergenic, breathable and thermoregulating. But best of all, it offers a light fluffiness with quick bounce-back that mimics the appeal of down.
“We had such a big response to our Low Down [a recycled down bedding range] that launched earlier this year. So progressing the category and producing an alternative option for our customers was high on our priority list,” co-founder Hayley Worley says. “We only ever use natural fibres across our range and we wanted to stay true to this. But the conventional options like cotton or bamboo just didn’t stack up and meet our ‘lofty and cosy’ standards.”
The quilts come in light (250 grams per square metre) or medium (400gsm) weights depending on your climate and sleep preferences. You can also shop a combo bundle for all-season snuggling – the two weights can be used together to create the warmest option.
“I was a product developer in the textile industry for 10 years before starting Sheet Society, so pairing my experience in design and production with my vision for the brand has helped keep our finger on the pulse of new innovations,” Worley says. “Finessing the [corn] fibre properties was a really important part of the development process, ensuring the balance between the fluffy look of the loft supported the warmth and functionality.”
Tags that read “this is the side”, a diamond-quilted pattern that keeps warmth evenly spread and colour-coded clips, which can be used to attach the two weights together, are user-friendly features typical of the six-year-old brand.
Pillows come in low and soft or medium and firm options to appeal to side and back sleepers alike. Both types are available in standard and king sizes.
You can pop Cloud Corn products in the wash on a cold, gentle cycle and tumble dry on warm. The brand also recommends airing out your bedding on warm, breezy days to keep things fresh.
