From white sands and crystal waters to adrenaline-pumping adventures, Nadi is the ultimate tropical destination for both rest and exploration. In partnership with Canberra Airport and Fiji Airways, we explore why this tropical haven is far more than just a stopover.

Let’s face it, layovers usually suck. But a 48-hour pitstop in Nadi, Fiji? That’s not a stopover – that’s a mini-vacation. A holiday within a holiday, if you will.

Nadi is more than just a gateway to the rest of the world: it’s a vibrant, sun-soaked introduction to Fijian culture, cuisine and natural beauty. Whether you’re heading to Japan, Hong Kong, San Francisco or Singapore, spending some time in Fiji’s enchanting archipelago en route will make your journey more memorable (and a hell of a lot more relaxing).

Day 1

Arrival and check-in

Touch down at Nadi International Airport and feel the balmy island breeze before you’ve even left the terminal. Whether you’re splurging on a luxury resort on Denarau Island, opting for a boutique stay in Nadi, or a no-frills backpackers’ hostel, be sure to settle in quickly – there’s no time to waste.

Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple

Kick off your day with a visit to the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Built in 1926 (though it’s undergone major rebuilding and expansion since then), the vivid Dravidian architecture of the structure is adorned with intricate carvings of deities and mythological stories. The temple serves as a spiritual hub for the local Indo-Fijian community, offering visitors a serene yet vibrant experience. Remember to dress modestly and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere while respecting its sacred nature.

Nadi Market

Next, head to the bustling Nadi Market. This is the go-to for everything from fresh produce (the mangoes and pineapples here taste like sunshine) to handmade trinkets you can bring home as souvenirs. The market is an explosion of colour, sound and life: a great way to immerse yourself in the day-to-day experience of Fiji.

Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Just outside Nadi lies this lush orchid garden, once owned by actor Raymond Burr of Perry Mason fame. Its name might sound like something out of a fantasy novel, but the reality is perhaps even more magical, boasting over 2000 orchid varieties, tranquil lily ponds and shaded boardwalks through dense rainforest.

If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the Sleeping Giant Zipline Park, a 35-acre eco-friendly adventure park with seven zip lines. Here, you’ll experience flying through the lush green jungle and over fresh waterfalls at speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour – and all just a 20-minute car ride from Nadi.

Fijian Culture Night

Experience authentic Fijian hospitality at the Fiji Culture Village. Begin with a guided tour showcasing traditional bures (huts) and crafts like weaving and woodcarving. Then, participate in a kava ceremony – a communal ritual centred around a drink of yaqona root – before enjoying a feast cooked in a lovo (underground oven) under the stars. The night culminates in a Meke performance featuring fire-dancing and storytelling through music. Feel the relaxing kava in your system and enjoy an ideal end to an exciting day.

Day 2

South Sea Island Day Trip

Start your second day by hopping on a short boat ride to South Sea Island. This tiny speck of paradise is the picture-perfect mental image you probably have of Fiji: white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and coral reefs teeming with marine life. Whether you’re snorkelling alongside technicolour fish or lounging with a cocktail in hand (tough choice), it’s the kind of place that’ll change how you view layovers – the kind you’ll daydream about next time you’re stuck in a stuffy airport terminal.

Jump on a tour boat if you can: it’ll take the stress away and give you more time to focus on relaxing. Plus, these tours usually include a buffet lunch.

Port Denarau

Back on the mainland, spend some time at the lively marina of Port Denarau. More than just a transit hub, it’s also a hotspot for waterfront dining, boutique shopping and people-watching. Shop for souvenirs here (if you didn’t pick any up at Nadi Market) or indulge in fresh seafood while watching yachts glide by.

Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool

Still in need of some R and R? Unwind at Sabeto Hot Springs with a therapeutic mud bath followed by a soak in natural thermal pools. Known for their mineral-rich volcanic mud, these pools are said to rejuvenate both body and mind.

If you’re craving more beach time (and perhaps a little more adventure), Natadola Beach offers pristine sand and calm water for swimming and relaxing. Or take the adventure meter up a notch and dive in for some snorkelling or kayaking.

Sunset Dinner Cruise

End your whirlwind trip with a sunset dinner cruise. Imagine sipping on tropical cocktails as the sky turns shades of pink and orange, with live Fijian music playing softly in the background and a seafood and barbeque buffet spread out before you. This is living.

Not feeling the cruise? No problem – Nadi has plenty of dining options for every budget and mood. Head to Vasaqa Fiji for mouthwatering Fijian-style barbeque, or visit Club 57 & Bistro for dinner with a view – a prime sunset spot.

One last thing

If you’re not quite in the mood to hit the hay just yet or still have a bit of time before heading back to the airport, head to Ed’s Bar – it’s a laid-back spot that transforms into a lively venue by night, or check out Ice Bar if you’re after a little boogie. Feeling more like a relaxing beachside beer or cocktail? The Wreck is where you want to be.
