Brisbane’s The Calile clocked in at 25, earning the Best in Oceania title, while Hobart’s The Tasman also picked up a spot.

The World’s 50 Best team – known for its influential lists of the world’s best bars and restaurants – made its first foray into the world of hotels last year.

The crew’s latest hotel list was announced in London last night. The Calile Hotel clocked in at number 25 (a drop from 12th place in last year’s list) and also scored the title Best in Oceania. Hobart’s The Tasman also made the list at number 49.

The awards are voted on by 600 industry leaders including hoteliers, travel journalists, luxury travellers and hospitality professionals.

The Calile co-owner Catherine Malouf said, “To have been selected two years in a row marks a significant affirmation of The Calile’s place on the global hotel industry stage. This is … a win for Brisbane as a destination, and we are humbled to again represent Australia and be recognised as leading in the Oceania region.”

Since opening nearly six years ago, The Calile has made a name for itself with its bold Miami inspired design, distinctive Juliet balconies and high-end dining offerings. It’s also become a go-to for celebrities, welcoming everyone from Kourtney Kardashian to her majesty Nigella Lawson (who called their croissants the “best ever”).

The Tasman opened in December 2021 and was recognised for seamlessly blending Georgian, Art Deco and modern architecture across its 152 rooms and suites.

The top spot on the list went to Capella Bangkok with Passalacqua in Lake Como, Rosewood Hong Kong, Paris’s Cheval Blanc and The Upper House in Hong Kong rounding out the top five. Also in the neighbourhood, Desa Potato Head in Bali popped in at number 21 on the list.
