Central Otago is rugged and, at points, remote, with picturesque landscapes of dusty mountains and flowing rivers. So, it’s the ideal location for Purepods to add a pair of its glass eco-cabins, which allow visitors to be surrounded by nature in spectacular locations around New Zealand.

Purepods two newest cabins are located near the town of Cromwell, where the Kawarau River meets Lake Dunstan. Cromwell is an hour’s drive from Queenstown and Wānaka, so the secluded pods feel like they are a world away from busy streets while also being relatively accessible.

Both the Tāima and Haurapa Purepods sit on hills more than 300 metres above sea level, meaning there are times when you might literally walk through the clouds to reach your pod.

Pods contain a range of amenities, including luxury camp chairs to settle into on the deck, an assortment of games, local reference books and a telescope.

The Haurapa Purepod has panoramic views up to the Pisa Mountain Range, which turns golden as the sun sets. Once the sun goes down, the stars appear – easily viewed through the pod’s glass ceiling once you’re ready to hit the sack.

The Tāima Purepod is in a slightly more rugged location, surrounded by views of the rocky Kawarau Gorge and with access to the Lake Dunstan Trail for cycling and walking. The trail links the townships of Cromwell and Clyde along (and sometimes suspended above) the lake (Note: Tāima is best enjoyed by those who are comfortable driving on gravel roads and is not suited for campervans or small 2WD cars, which are better suited for Haurapa.)

“Tāima and Haurapa Purepods are warm and cosy all year round,” says Stephanie Hassall, Purepods’s CEO. “Imagine looking at the Pisa Mountains covered in snow while staying toasty in a luxurious Purepod.”

The eco-cabins are also located near some of Central Otago’s most popular wineries and cellar doors, including Cloudy Bay, Mt Difficulty, Te Kano and Terra Sancta.

You can either bring supplies with you, or pre-order breakfast and dinner food hampers filled with fresh food grown, harvested and reared locally. In Central Otago, this includes the pick of the season’s fruit.
