Sub-Station Cafe

Sydney’s electrical substations generally go unnoticed. Fortunately for the Alexandria locals, substation No. 152 has undergone an extensive transformation and is now home to a boutique coffee spot – Sub-Station Cafe. Opening in September, this summery oasis is the ideal hideaway from its industrial surrounds, featuring an open kitchen with light globes hanging from bed spring shades, framed vintage advertisements of stores like Coles and David Jones and a cosy courtyard filled with flourishing plants and petite picnic-style tables.

Orders are taken at the counter, with a concise menu and a coffee in the form of a creamy and robust Single Origin house blend. For breakfast, a big one comprises a spread of avocado, tomato, ricotta, ham off the bone, free range eggs with a paddle board Luxe Bakery’s sourdough toast, while specials include the Shakshuka, prepared in a shallow pan with poached eggs and chunky tomato sauce with grilled vegetables, chilli and fresh herbs from the garden. In addition to the range of sandwiches and salads on offer, the baked treats (including the decadent lemon curd tarts that line the counter) are not to be missed.
