When Scott Faso arrived in Sydney from Los Angeles in 1998, he moved around a lot. He went from a terrace house to an apartment, then back to a terrace. Every time, he had to change the furniture and couldn’t find a decent outlet to sell it.

Faso and partner Charles Hardingham opened Home Furniture on Consignment in 2002, aiming to remedy this problem. It sells used designer furniture at about 50 per cent of its original price, sometimes even with the tags still attached. The format is common in California, apparently.

Long-time employee and interior designer Michael Orringe took over in 2015. He’s continued to acquire beautiful pieces from brands such as B&B Italia, Poliform, Herman Miller and Jardan, as well as one-of-a-kind commissions produced by smaller names.

In addition to striking couches, tables, chairs and rugs, there are plenty of ornaments and trinkets, such as handpainted globes and even the odd taxidermied reindeer head, ready to be mounted on a wall somewhere.

A lot of this stuff still isn’t cheap, but it is a bargain, relatively speaking. Just be aware: stock moves fast. It’s rare for something to stick around for more than a month or two. Scope out the HOFC website for new arrivals.
