DRNKS, a new wine website with neat, clean design and ease of purchase, eliminates the need to travel far and wide, sift through cheap catalogues or dive deep into the cellar in search of something wonderfully special to sip on. The founder of DRNKS, Joel Amos, who was assisted by digital agency Present Company in the design and functionality of the website, source only the best-tasting, small-batch, organic and sustainable drops and interesting and unusual beers and sake. All products have been hand selected, thus Amos knows where each varietal or brew has come from, who made it and how. All of the stock at DRNKS is stored in a temperature-controlled warehouse, and is only transported in temperature controlled conditions when the weather is suitable. This is important because many products are fragile and easily compromised by poor weather conditions.
Amos has been working with wine for 20 years across vineyards, wineries, wholesale, bars, restaurants and retail and decided to channel his experience into a store filled with things he wanted to drink. “Wine in Australia has become a lot more homogenised then people realise,” he says. “There are hundreds of chemical additives you can put in wine, but don’t need to list on the label. The wines we sell aren’t made in a lab – they’re made by real people with real vineyards doing the real work, and you can taste the difference.”
DRNKS delivers all over Australia, with next-day delivery available in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and mixed cases are available. From the wine list, Amos recommends a 2011 chardonnay from Burgundy, but there is plenty more to stumble across yourself. Try a "wild-style" sauvignon blanc by Dandy in the Clos, it's all natural, with no additives, and pressed by hand-crank basket press – a collaboration undertaken in 2013 by wine guy Brendan Hilferty, winemaker Alex Retief, wine writer Mike Bennie in Tumbarumba in NSW.
