If Stoner Sloth was looking for dinner in Newtown, D'Munchies is where he’d end up.

David Pyne is D’ Munchies’s chef and co-owner. He’s worked in kitchens around Sydney and in London for 11 years. “It’s pretty obvious how the idea came about. It’s a very loud statement, but that’s sort of what we’re about. It’s for people who enjoy that, and that’s what we’re here for.”

A bold two-metre-tall marijuana mural dominates the D’ Munchies dining area. It’s by local illustrator Sindy Sinn, who has done work for Young Henrys, Mary’s and Mambo.

The D’ Munchies menu is pretty hilarious – it seems like it's made up of as many weird, indulgent junk food mash-ups as they could think of. It serves pretzel baguettes; crunchy pretzel-infused ice-cream; dense burgers with prosciutto and creamy brie; and pepperoni-pizza hot dogs. The most indulgent dish is the deep-fried ravioli nachos – a gateway snack, if ever we’ve seen one.

“It’s not just crazy things for the sake of it,” Pyne says. “There were a few good, crazy combinations we came up with, but whether they work in a restaurant setting is another thing. You can have a Nutella and salt-and-vinegar chips sandwich, but does it work?” Pyne is expecting plenty of takeaway business. There’s even a map on the D’ Munchies’ wall showing diners the quickest route to Camperdown Park.

“It’s not for us to tell you to smoke or not to smoke,” says Alessandro Licata, manager at D’ Munchies. “Many people come here and look at the mural we have … I think it’s a new thing that could be really good, and Newtown is the perfect zone for it.” We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see if the restaurant has anything more going for it than the novelty factor.

“Nobody’s ever glassed someone while they’re stoned,” Pyne says, laughing. “If you want to go out and smoke a joint, you should be able to.”
