Menu - Mr Yum

Features

Newtown’s Rolling Penny plates up the sort of food you could happily eat every day. Located down the St Peters end of King Street, it’s detached from the bustle of other popular haunts in the neighbourhood.

Siblings Martin and Penny Morgan opened the cafe in March 2016, inspired by healthy eating and the occasional treat like their brekkie roll – essentially the kind of menu you can eat on the regular, as they do.

With bread supplied by The Bread & Butter Project and beans roasted nearby by The Little Marionette (Sanchez Blend 7), Rolling Penny’s an all-local affair.

A punchy menu keeps things simple, with colourful takes on old faithfuls, such as the hot-pink Bircher bowl: mixed oats, coconut, almonds and chia soaked in cold-pressed beetroot and apple juice, then topped with yoghurt, fruit and honey. The theme rolls into lunch, with classics like the Penny Waldorf and Martin Reuben sandwiches welcoming subtle updates in the way of house-made flavoured mayos.

Muffins and sweet treats are also made in-house – the thick-cut banana bread, laced with toasted nuts and seeds, is worthy of a meal replacement.

The design is kept single; raw timber and black exposed conduits and lighting give the space a relaxed, no-fuss feel. Rotating works by local artists inject colour into the whitewashed walls.
