The Stand Arcade is an obvious fit for Maison Balzac. The elegant glassware label, founded by Elise Pioch Balzac in 2012, has opened a sequel to its Surry Hills store in the heritage CBD address. It’s a far cry from the label’s modest beginnings, when Balzac sold candles from the back of her car.
The store’s decor matches the glamour of its heritage home. There are high ceilings and black timber floorboards, illuminated by an impressive 1970s chandelier. Local florist Doctor Cooper crafts an ever-changing window installation, adding to the wave of alluring scents which hit you upon entering.
All Maison Balzac’s signature items are in stock, from J’ai Soif carafes to pom-pom wine glasses line the shelves. The Lobster Apron is a fan-favourite, ditto Monsieur Escargot, the snail-shaped incense holder. You can also browse oil burners, brightly-coloured platters and elegant candles, in classic scents such as La Rose and Black Sassafras).
