Features

As you wander down Cleveland Street, look for ‘505’ spray-painted in red on the metal door. Once inside, dim lighting and heavy curtains block the world outside, as if you have entered a secret bunker.

The comparison to the original venue is a little unfair, for nowhere can have the same charm as Apt 505 in the much-loved Hibernian House (now used as a theatre space for new productions and workshops). However, on its own merit, 505 on Cleveland Street is a little quirky and a lot of fun.

The artist-run venue’s focus on live music (every night except Sundays) is a clear drawcard and plots a course from Latin and jazz (every Tuesday) to reggae, funk, gypsy and French rap. Perhaps less appealing are the poky couches and upturned plastic bins as way of seating – but you really ought to be dancing anyway.

Come with an open mind (the crowd is as varied as the music) and a good time will most certainly be had.
