The Carrington
Like most inner-city pubs, The Carrington has something of a chequered history. It was originally established in 1877, changed hands many times after, and re-opened in 2015 sporting a fresh face and relaxed atmosphere.
Current owner Roger Gregg (ex-Keystone Group) saw the pub advertised online and signed the lease just two days later.
Architect Lucy Humphrey oversaw the redesign of three distinct spaces. Get cosy on leather couches in The Poke; an intimate space perfect for a date. Otherwise, soak up the sun in the Arthur Street garden bar, or enjoy a chat with one of the sociable bartenders in the Bourke Street bar.
The menu offers the usual burgers, parmas, salads and pastas, but The Carrington’s real drawcard is a selection of four steaks rubbed in a pepper-coffee blend. The largest is a one-kilogram Wagyu flank; if you’re a smaller eater, the Black Angus rump or hanger will do just fine.
The single-page wine list doesn’t offer a heap of choice, but it has the advantage of selling everything by the glass. Unusually for a pub, there’s also a decent range of cocktails. Try the Gingerbread Espresso Martini or, on a hot day, the Cucumber-Mint Martini. Tap beers from Stone & Wood, James Squire and Rocks Brewing follow the easy-drinking theme.
The pub is proudly pooch-friendly (it even has a dog menu); and happy hour runs from 4pm to 6pm every weekday, including house wine and tap beers.
