Malika Bakehouse

Efe Topuzlu and Ozgur Sefkatli – the team behind Levantine bistro Izgara – say breakfast is a ritual in Istanbul, where they grew up. They’re bringing the ritual to Sydney at Malika, their bright Turkish bakery in Surry Hills.

Crown Street is a fitting location (Malika means “queen” in Turkish) for the sequel to the popular Botany cafe of the same name. Diners crowd the footpath, eating classic Turkish breakfasts, hand-rolled gozleme and simit bagels stuffed with egg and sucuk (spicy sausage).

Venture inside and you’ll be met with a cosy dining room and a pastry case filled with the day’s house-baked treats. Think flaky boreks, sweet and cheesy kunefe, and doughnuts piped with Nutella.

To drink, Deluca coffee is brewing alongside a considered selection of teas including rose and pomegranate. Otherwise, there are cold-pressed juices – watermelon, beetroot, gingered apple and more – to cut through the heat of your sucuk.
